Brooks Teen Advisory Committee Meets Memphis artist George Hunt

11/25/2012 by Emilyyyy

Last week the Brooks Teen Advisory Committee met with Memphis artist George Hunt for a workshop at the museum. The group worked with their own ideas in the style of the artist and everyone went home with a finished work of art. We are in the process of gathering feedback from the committee to use when planning artist workshops for teen audiences in the future!

Zahra Nazari: Intern Extraordinaire

11/18/2012 by Emilyyyy

My Brooks internship began when I was an international graduate student from Iran attending the Memphis College of Art in painting. I had been searching for an opportunity that would be connected to the art world in Memphis and also help me to learn new skills. I was very interested in the Brooks Museum because I felt it could be an environment that introduces me to the importance of public relations. During my time there (summer 2012) I learned about […]

Dia de los Muertos: Recap

11/09/2012 by Emilyyyy

On Saturday, October 27th, the Memphis Brooks Museum was open, and very much alive, to a day of festivities spirited in the Mexican tradition of celebrating the dead. The families of Memphis’ Latino community and art enthusiasts alike filled the Brooks, honoring Dia de los Muertos with face painting in the Renaissance galleries, skeletons reanimated through sculpture on the lower level, and outside on the terrace – several stunning performances from local Latinos preserving their heritage through sound and dance. It […]

The End of an Era: Kathleen’s Going Away Party

10/30/2012 by Emilyyyy

Karleen Gardner is Director of Education at the Brooks, and just received a new job in Minnesota. While we are all very proud and excited for her, she will be greatly missed. To send her off, we celebrated at Earnestine and Hazel’s with soul burgers, cupcakes  and many great memories. It is ironic that we just posted about Greely Myatt’s cake sculptures because guess what Karleen was given for her parting gift? Check out her Greely Myatt slice from the […]

Two of Our Favorite Things: Art and Cake

10/17/2012 by Emilyyyy

While perusing one of my favorite websites for dinner (really, dessert) ideas, bonappetit.com, I came across this amazing article about a well-known Memphis artist and Brooks favorite, Greely Myatt. Now, admittedly I found this article because I really wanted to make cake for dinner, but alas was distracted by the mere visual of the delectable dessert. I am reminded of Wayne Thiebaud and his paintings of sugary things. My husband doesn’t have an art background, and while we were watching […]
